Being familiar with this author’s work, when I first saw the title of this book, my first thought was, She’s done it again! I have read some of Kenna McKinnon’s books and find her to be incomparably versed on the miasma of the mind and it’s malfunctioning pathology. This is a psychological mystery and so much more.

McKinnon shows her great ability to research the details of her stories. Something I must give her credit for is the superbly entwined lives and dealings of the drug smugglers. Unless knowing first hand, the amount of detail in this regard had to have been thoroughly researched. It was like reading about a real-life investigation into the secrecy, protection, and killing that seems a part of drug smuggling activities.

Besides being a baffling mystery, there is the undeniable romance between the dual characters of Annie and Mark. One suffers with the troubling pathology but both are deeply in love – all the while living as one detective and one brilliant amateur sleuth.

Batshit Crazy on Murder Island is an intense mystery with romance thrown in and keeps the two main characters in the forefront of the story. However, each and every character is a stand-out. Each is true to the nature of the part they play, from smuggler, to killer, to victim – it’s all there. McKinnon’s characters are always unique. Needless to say, I will be reading more from this author.

This novel starts with blood and brains flying everywhere! The island town of Serendipity is found to be a hot spot for drug smuggling. It takes the combined talents of Annie Hansen and Mark Snow to figure out the ins and outs of the perps for the crimes. What a surprise when Annie's father becomes a suspect, too! This imaginative tale will keep you guessing throughout. The couple's newly adopted dog, Chuckles, plays a part, too! Good read!

5.0 out of 5 stars A psychedelic OCD schizophrenic detective – what could go wrong?
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 4, 2022
I read the first in this series and loved the balance between the human depth, comment on dealing with mental health and how, you might be batshit crazy, but it doesn’t mean you’re stupid…
A quiet, small island, just off Vancouver Island, is the scene as in the first novel. Already I’m beginning to expect that this could be a long running series where in a sleepy community it will be hard to spot the innocent resident.
Having said that, McKenna weaves an imaginative narrative of drug smuggling, deceit, double cross and violence that is totally entertaining and enthralling. Add to this the writing sensitivity and understanding of a young schizophrenic woman with OCD with an uncanny ability to solve crime (when she is off her meds) and now, a loving partner police detective who gets her seeing pink snakes and strange psychedelic creatures as a part of the woman he loves – it makes for an engaging formula that McKenna masters.
No plot spoilers because the plot is complex, but this is a book to sit in a darkened room with a lava lamp and enjoy. I might suggest reading book 1 first as it enables you to understand the characters more but, regardless, it is another 5 stars all the way.
